Top 10 Essential Garden Products You Need

There are many garden products available on the market these days, each bragging that they are the ‘essential’ product for your garden or every gardeners ‘best friend’. But what do you really need? Below is a list of what we think are the garden products every gardener needs in their shed, whether they are beginners or seasoned pros.

Gardening Gloves – As we know, many weeds and pests have thorns, spikes or stings so a good pair of gloves are one of the garden products everyone needs in their kit. Gloves can prevent blisters when digging and also stop your skin becoming too dry and subsequently cracking and also protect you from nasty organisms like tetanus which can be present in soil.

Trowel – Without these garden products hardly anything would get done! No pots would be potted, no plants planted and no bulbs would be buried. A good strong trowel either plastic or stainless steel with a wooden handle, is a garden product you cannot live without.

Shovel/Spade – For the big jobs when a trowel just can’t handle it, a shovel or a spade is required. Whether it’s for planting large trees or shrubs, turning beds ready for new planting or helping to clear up piles of garden waste ready for composting.

Secateurs – Whenever something needs pruning you need a good, strong pair of secateurs. They can be used to keep all of your shrubs, bushes and trees in check. Swivel handled, by-pass versions are the best to look for in the garden products section of your garden centre as they are easier on the wrist and give a cleaner cut.

Rake – If you have trees or shrubs in your garden which shed their leaves than a rake is another one of the garden products you must have, nothing clears leaves off the lawn better than a rake. Mini rakes are also available for getting into those hard-to-reach places.

Shears – A garden product that no house-holder with a hedge could do without, unless you have a massive amount of greenery to cut regularly, a good pair of sharp flat-blade shears give a great even cut just as well as electric cutters.

Wheelbarrow – A must-have if you need to move soil, compost, mulch or waste over any distance. Will rescue you from back-ache when used correctly and will come in handy for transporting all your other garden products.

Lawnmower – Doesn’t really need an explanation really, if you have a lawn, you need a lawnmower. Always ensure that your blade is sharp and don’t cut your grass too short.

Hose – During dry spells, we can all do without lugging a watering can to and from the tap every few minutes. A hose with will save you time in the long-run and you can purchase attachments that will allow you to feed your plants at the same time as watering.

Roundup – No list of garden products is complete without the inclusion of the world’s best-selling weed killer. Roundup has been specially formulated to kill weeds right down to the root so once the weed is gone, it’s gone for good.

When can my children/pets use an area where Roundup has been applied?

The moment Roundup has dried. It deactivates on contact with soil, and is degraded by micro organisms leaving no residues in the soil.

Why has Roundup killed my lawn?

Roundup should never be used on lawns. Because it kills all plants with green leaf tissue, Roundup is actually a very effective grass killer.

When can I replant/reseed after treatment?

Immediately, if you want to. We recommend, however, leaving the weeds at least 7 to 10 days to absorb the optimum amount of Roundup.
