When Oldham council chiefs provided their StreetScene staff with flame guns to eradicate unsightly weeds, no one could have foreseen the damage that would be done to local business.

Jon Riley was left blazing mad after the council team unwittingly set fire to the front of his father’s Roll End Carpets shop. He believes that the family run business, which has been trading for 36 years, could have been destroyed.

Council bosses have now banned the use of flame guns whilst an investigation is pending.

Roundup would have been the safer option and is already used commercially used by professionals across the UK thanks to its fast and safe action in eradicating weeds.
